Mango Lassi is in most if not all the Indian restaurants we have been to. It's a light refreshing yogurt drink that is lightly sweetened and great to pair in my opinion with your dish especially if you are eating something spicy cause, BONUS it's a cool palette cleanser for sure so you can keep indulging in that amazing dish you just got or made!
Some cool things I have learned is that not all Lassi is sweet, in fact there are many types of different lassi such as sweet, savory, spicy, and salty. I have personally only tried sweet and salty and let’s just say I like the sweet for now! The salty wasn’t super my jam, but is something very common in India to drink. Our family and friends in India use a very specific salt in drinks and food that are beneficial in their health. Most common and preferred is either Kala Namak (Black Himalayan Salt) or Sendha Namak (Pink Himalayan Salt).
What are the benefits of these salts?
KALA NAMAK (Black Himalayan Salt): Aids digestion, soothes muscle spasm, enhances heart health, reduces bloating and more!
SENDHA NAMAK (Pink Himalayan Salt): Aids digestions, regulate sodium intake, improve gut health and more!
This recipe is really simple and easy to make and can be adapted to your liking! You can also mix other fruits to change things up, but Mango Lassi is a classic that you cannot go wrong with and will be a hit in your home in no time!
Ingredients
MANGO LASSI
- 1 cup yogurt (can use greek or regular)
- 1 cup ripe mango
- ½ cup water or milk
- 2 tsp Honey (*or to taste, this mango lassi is VERY LIGHT on the sugar)
- 1 cardamom pod seeds ground (optional)
Instructions
- Pour the yogurt, mango and water/milk into the blender
- Crush your cardamom pod seeds till its a ground mixture
- Mix the honey and ground cardamom together to make “cardamom honey”
- Heat up the cardamom honey mixture a tiny bit in the microwave to have it mix better in the blender.
- Pour the cardamom honey in the blender
- Blend, taste for sweet preference, pour, drizzle some more cardamom honey on top and enjoy!
Tips
- The more ripe the mango the better the flavor. You can switch out fresh mangos for frozen, but it's not a guarantee if the frozen mangos are ripe.
- Cardamom Honey - This was YUMMY and something that I did to help the honey mix better into the smoothie. You can use other sweeteners of your choice, but I usually always have honey and like this sweetener best. Heat the honey slightly and mixing in the grounded cardamom was a light bulb moment! I am definitely going to find more recipes to use in… I am already thinking about something with tea. :)
- Fun tip/fact, when Dhruv and I met he always mentioned how sweet EVERYTHING was that we ate even if something was a savory dish he would call it sweet and he has changed my perspective completely as YES us Americans use sugar and overwhelming amounts in EVERYTHING! So most of our recipes or anything I try I am constantly trying to cut out as much sugar as possible to still have great flavor but less the suagr.
- Water or Milk? Just depends on what you're in the mood for, both work great, but using milk will definitely create a creamier mango lassi which you can’t go wrong
- Mango lassi is supposed to be on the thicker side and very yogurty. It's something very refreshing in most Indian restaurants.
How do you make your Mango Lassi?!?
