What is Butter chicken?
Butter Chicken or “Murgh Makhani” is an Indian curry that can be made in a variety of ways. The staple ingredients of a Butter Chicken recipe usually are: tomatoes, butter/ghee, cashews, lots of spices and cream. It’s literally a dish from heaven, I promise!
How spicy is our Butter Chicken Recipe and Spice Kit?
Mild! We did this to make sure our Butter Chicken recipe would work for all spice tolerances. If you like things spicey we recommend adding whatever peppers or hot sauces that you love to our dish to meet your heat preference! You can see “How Can I Add More Heat/Spice?” for more in depth details.
How Can I Add More Heat/Spice?
We are big fans of adding more heat to our Butter Chicken recipe! We encourage all additions of peppers or hot sauces. However, our personal favorites are peppers: jalapeño and serrano. Make sure to smell or taste test your peppers before adding as the heat varies from pepper to pepper. If adding any chopped peppers or hot sauce, you will want to add them to the dish when you are cooking the onions down. Check out the step by step process on the back of our Butter Chicken recipe and spice kit packet.
How Can I Add More Sweetness?
Lyndi’s Mom is a big fan of her Butter Chicken recipe being on the sweeter side! If you like things sweet we suggest you cook down your red onions much longer than stated on our recipe. You are trying to bring the red onions to a beautiful caramelized stage. As the red onions caramelize it brings out natural sweet notes to the dish. However, you can add white sugar if desired, but give the carmelized onions a try first and then add sugar if its not there yet!

Where do our spices come from?
Our spices are from all over the world. We have partnered with suppliers who focus on getting spices from harvest to consumption faster through utilizing a shorter supply chain and are always seeking the best of the best. Our spices are premium, fresh, and handled with care to keep 100% of their flavor right into your sauté pan and onto your taste buds!
Is our Butter Chicken recipe and Spice Kit Naturally Gluten & Lactose Free?
While it is common to include dairy in a Butter Chicken recipe, we made our recipe to taste amazing without it. Our Butter Chicken recipe and spice kit is preservative free and contains only possible trace elements of lactose and gluten making it dietary restriction friendly.
Why do we use Ghee and not butter, also what the heck is Ghee?
Ghee is butter minus the milk solids and water. Similar to clarified butter, which is cooked just to the point where the water evaporates and the milk solids separate (and sink), ghee however is cooked until the milk solids begin to caramelize. So why don’t we use butter? Because Ghee makes a big flavor difference in your Butter Chicken recipe as compared to regular butter. It hits all the flavor profiles we love in our Butter Chicken. Using it in our recipe also makes the curry naturally lactose free. However, ghee can be substituted for clarified butter or regular butter if necessary.
- Ghee we recommend: Simple Ghee
Costco: *Best bang for your buck for its large size and is shelf stable.
- Substitute Ghee for butter we recommend: 1 cup butter & here is our fav butter
Butter: KerryGold
Why No Cream or Dairy in our Butter Chicken recipe and Spice Kit?
While it is common to include dairy in Butter Chicken recipes, we wanted to make our recipe more consumable for those who are lactose intolerant. So, we made our recipe to taste amazing without it. :)
*However, you can totally add some cream to your desired taste. We suggest you add a little at a time.
Why Canned Tomatoes?
If you have easy access to fresh and fully ripened tomatoes right off the vine, then we definitely recommend you use those! However, most of us buy our tomatoes from the grocery store, and unfortunately those tomatoes are picked WELL before they have naturally ripened on the vine. Canned tomatoes however are harvested much closer to their natural ripeness and thus often have better flavor and we are allll about the flavor for our Butter Chicken recipe and spice kit!
- Our fav canned tomatoes: San Marzano,
- Fresh Tomatoes Substitute: about 2 cups of chopped fresh tomatoes
Why Basmati Rice?
Basmati is the traditional rice served with Indian dishes and especially Butter Chicken. It is a long grain rice that can be sold in white and wholegrain varieties. Basmati rice grains double in size through cooking and stay separate. It tends to have a more dry and fluffy texture as compared to more “sticky” rice varieties. You can of course swap basmati rice for your preferred type of rice.
See our preferred options below.
How Should I Prepare My Chicken?
Any simply seasoned chicken will work great. For ease and flavor, we recommend buying and breaking down a rotisserie chicken. Or you could bake 2lbs of raw chicken at 350 degrees until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. You can even BBQ some on the grill with just some salt and pepper. IF cooking raw chicken always make sure to rest the chicken for 5 minutes before cutting to retain the moisture.
How is our Butter Chicken recipe and Spice Kit Affordable?
One order of Butter Chicken from a restaurant can easily be $15+ and that is just the curry & rice…no naan. We are proud that our recipe, fully prepared, feeds easily 5-7 people. We are a lil nerdy here and love the lil tiny tiny details, so after buying all the ingredients without skimping on anything… yes, yes we got the naan :) you are a lil more or less than $30 total and that includes our spice kit for feeding all your loved ones some yummy Butter Chicken in the comfort of your home.
